Weekly Puro's Joshi Top 5 Matches of 2007
« on: January 10, 2008, 07:02:15 PM »
The Weekly Puro magazine from Japan put out the TOP 5 of all companies in the 1/6 Almanac. They lumped joshi together however.

Here's their list:

1. Yoshiko Tamura vs. Emi Sakura, NEO 03/05/2007

2. Azumi Hyuga & Arisa Nakajima vs. Nanae Takahashi & Natsuki*Taiyo, JWP 4/15/2007

3. Kyoko Kimura & Aoi Kizuki vs. Hiroyo Matsumoto & Misaki Ohata, IBUKI 11/11/2007

4. Atsuko Emoto vs. Kyoko Kimura, IBUKI 05/05/2007

5. Tsubasa Kuragaki & Kayoko Haruyama vs. Manami Toyota & Etsuko Mita, JWP 10/21/07

2007 MVP: Azumi Hyuga (JWP)

I guess their lists make as much sense as the ones western wrestling "Journalists" put together.

LOL! I like that you put "journalists" in quotations. For me, Ayako vs. Meiko was the best women's match I saw this year.

exactly
it has the necessary drama, highspots (but not too spot happy), proper ring psychology and near count falls
plus this match proved that joshi is still very much alive by getting loud crowd pops
what more can you ask for?

They agreed with me about Tamura/Sakura being number one this year....therefore, they must know what they are taling about and all of you who disagree are simpletons who don't know what you're talking about *hee

But it is a crime that Meiko/Ayako wasn't on the list...that match was pretty damn awesome

I bet the writers have trouble even getting hold of the stuff since Joshi is so niche. Just be grateful they are trying to pay some attention.

Is it really more difficult for a Japanese person, whose job it is to watch wrestling, to get a hold of Joshi than it is for us on the other side of the world who follow it as a hobby?

I'm not sure how grateful I should be either. NEO isn't that good usually and if snubbing Sendai and Oz, which I like a lot more, hurts them then I wouldn't be grateful at all. It would sort of be like an american sheet picking a WEW match as the best women's match of the year, then completely leaving SHIMMER off.

What those matches lacked was Emi Sakura. She was the big cheese and the reason it came out #1. And both girls being excellent wrestlers was only the cherry on top.

Emi's got charisma.

And good for Kyoko, she stacked up 2 this year.

3. Kyoko Kimura & Aoi Kizuki vs. Hiroyo Matsumoto & Misaki Ohata, IBUKI 11/11/2007

4. Atsuko Emoto vs. Kyoko Kimura, IBUKI 05/05/2007

5. Tsubasa Kuragaki & Kayoko Haruyama vs. Manami Toyota & Etsuko Mita, JWP 10/21/07

2007 MVP: Azumi Hyuga (JWP)

1. Liked it a lot, but it would be outside my top five likely.
2. Loved that match, but it would definitely be outside my top five. Thought JWP had better matches in their big December show with the title matches.
4. We need more IBUKI. I hope lucky has picked up some shows from his time in Japan. PUNQ had a review of this one up recently. Its sounded like it was still pretty decent, but fairly disappointing for the abilities of the two.

I did I picked up the newest disc (IBUKI #18?), with 3/18 and 5/5. I haven't watched 5/5 yet. I already put some matches from 3/18 on my YouTube account.

But the clipping is GOD awful. Whole matches gutted. I'm praying this was done to keep the 5/5 Emoto vs. Kimura whole...

Jeez, only one of my MOTYC came through. I actually considered the Hyuga/Yoneyama an actual candidate as well as Ayako/Aja and Ayako/Satomura from Sendai.

Weekly Puro, I'm very disappointed.

I have to say Sakura Emi had a renaissance of sorts thanks in part to Ice Ribbon this past year.  I have a tape of her when she was in Zenjo's 35th Anniversary, and she didn't impress me in the least, but seeing her along with her students in a few matches this year, I have to admit, was really fun
