Intro & Questions
« on: August 23, 2013, 06:34:56 PM »
Greetings all!

Well, after finding out about this place I figured I'd give it a whirl here. I'm a hardcore Puroresu fanatic, but the only joshi show I've ever seen is AJW's Dream Slam I (or maybe it's the second one, the one with Akira Hokuto vs. Shinobu Kandori). I'm trying to get into it, so I figured I would go to the community of experts.

For reference, I'm a huge mark for the stiff style associated with Baba-era All Japan. I know the Joshi feds are incredibly varied (some comedy, some stiff, some overbooking, etc). So if I am just now trying to get into Joshi, what fed would be recommended?

Welcome!

Starting with that era of AJW isn't a bad idea.  With the interpromotional stuff they had going on at the time, you get to see wrestlers from several different companies, so you're exposed to different styles.  Dream Rush, Dreamslam II, and Big Egg Universe are just a few more big AJW shows from that period; most of these can be found on youtube pretty easily.

If you find yourself drawn to particular wrestlers, try to check out what they did at different points of their careers too.  For example, if you dig Hokuto, she went to GAEA Japan later in her career; if you're into Kandori, check out some LLPW.  And so on.

Thanks a lot for the input!

I liked watching Aja Kong from her Dream Slam match and the match she had for the WWF at Survivor Series 1995. Can you recommend feds featuring her? I think she might have done Chigusa Nagayo's fed.

Sure thing.  Other than AJW, Aja was in Arsion, which I'm not all that familiar with unfortunately, and then GAEA Japan (Chigusa Nagayo's fed).  These days, she wrestles mainly in OZ Academy, but it's not uncommon to see her on Sendai Girls shows either.

As far as matches go, I'm partial to anything she did with Bull Nakano, Dynamite Kansai, and Meiko Satomura.  Let's see if I can find a few links for you here...

which led to a singles cage match... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i99nPWsz7-Y - Aja Kong vs Bull Nakano (11/14/90)

I actually like the their Big Egg Universe match more, but I couldn't find it.  This one's good too though.

This post isn't really comprehensive, but those are just a few I dig.  Sorry you're not getting more replies here; you've probably noticed that this section of the forum doesn't see much traffic.

Wow. That Kong-Nakano cage match is GREAT! The others ones are really solid as well.

Thanks a lot for these matches. I know this area doesn't have a lot of activity. I looked up OZ Academy and saw that she's there along with Kansai and Manami Toyota. How is OZ?

I'm glad you enjoyed it!

OZ Academy is probably going to be a love-it-or-hate-it thing for you.  The matches that feature Ozaki and her crew tend to have tons of interference and a lot of crowd brawling, and some fans don't care for how overbooked all of it is.

I'm on the side that likes OZ.  They have a lot of my favorite wrestlers, and I really enjoy some of the longer-term storytelling aspects of their shows.

Here's a pretty recent match with Aja in OZ: http://www.dailymotion.com/video/x10qbo1_05-matsumoto-nakagawa-c-vs-kong-shida-oz-04-24-13_sport - Hiroyo Matsumoto/Tomoka Nakagawa vs Aja Kong/Hikaru Shida (04/24/13)

And from the same show, here's a good example of the Ozaki stuff I mentioned: http://www.dailymotion.com/video/x10qbez_04-ayumi-kurihara-vs-mayumi-ozaki-oz-04-24-13_sport - Mayumi Ozaki vs Ayumi Kurihara (04/24/13)

You'll probably quickly notice that today's scene is quite different from 10 or 20 years ago.  However, if you don't care for this, note that OZ is a pretty unique entity in the current scene.

Take your time exploring classic AJW. There's decades of greatness that, and it's unmatched in the modern scene. No company has a roster even comparable to AJW then, and the wrestling style has changed a lot. However, there's still good stuff spread around the various promotions. Follow the wrestlers that catch your eye.
