Thanks for the correction--I still think there's another gimmick I'm forgetting since it isn't Vancouver Cat.

So out of the ashes of the version of REINA that worked with K-DOJO and was led by Aki Kambayashi (aka Miss Mongol, La Malcriada, Vancouver Cat, etc.),

Vancouver Cat is former JD' Star wrestler Kei Akayama. She's married to MACHO*PUMP (Mr. Cacao) and they run those MASKED MANIA shows together. They also own a small wrestling/lucha store in Nakano Broadway where she runs the counter with her mask on.

World Wrestling Association December 31, 2013
Tokyo Shin-Kiba 1st Ring

This is running against RIBBONMANIA which is at the same time in Korakuen Hall....

BAAAAA-KA!

 *yellow

Yeah it's baka, but they are going for more of the CPE crowd that just the normal joshi crowd. Aki runs WWA with the same guys she runs Cat Panic Entertainment with.

The show will do fine by virtue of having Onita alone.

The promotion is actually called World Pro-Wrestling Association (WPA).

So who do you think is gonna win the Joshi MVP Award this year? I would love to see Arisa win it, of course. But I think Io and Kana are decent contenders as well.

Then again, Aikawa did wrestle in 2013 before she retired, so I guess that could give Tokyo Sports a reason to give it to her again for the third year in a row. *groans*

The award is more about getting your name out there and attention on the sport. It made sense when Aikawa won it the first time, probably even some sense when she won it the second time. With her retirement I have trouble seeing them give it to her again.

If they actually have a winner this year I think it will be Kana or Io. Arisa's title reign was a whole lot of nothing for the most part, but Kana's has brought something legitimately interesting into JWP with her heel run as champ. Its why I won't be surprised if she beats Arisa again. In Io's case she had good rise in position and actually comes off like a decently strong champ for Stardom. It also doesn't hurt that she also won the belt on the biggest joshi show this year.

Stalwarts vs. NOVA with Meiko and Kagetsu might have gotten them some notice though it may have happened too late into the year.

I don't see how it was nothing. She knocked off Hotta, Bolshoi, and Haruyama.  I agree Kana's reign is more interesting, but Arisa's was just meant to promote her as the new ace.

Arisa beat them, but it was in very boring fashions with not much there story wise sans Hotta who is pretty much past the point where she can give a truly worthwhile performance.

I think her next reign will add some spice, but this was just a straight forward one with her taking out top dogs. Kenny Omega said she's been a good champ for them as well.

I didn't think her reign was bad, just not what it could have and maybe should have been. I agree her next reign will likely turn out better.

I have no clue how that stuff works in Japan but maybe you could argue a bit of a human interest angle with Io given what happened to her and how she came back from the lowest of lows to the top of the mountain.

In the Weekly Pro Wrestling magazine 2014 Wrestler's Alamanac, Arisa is on the cover and the inside portraits page.

Funny thing is, the other joshi wrestlers are Io Shirai on the cover, and Mio on the inside page.

Yeah. Obviously the strategy behind it is the ultimate build on Arisa since she's the company woman and get something out of Kana at the same time. Mutually beneficial. Whenever a talented wrestler gets a short run with the top title, it's a teaser.

I didn't think her reign was bad, just not what it could have and maybe should have been. I agree her next reign will likely turn out better.

But don't you see it as the teaser it is? That wasn't all it was supposed to be; it's a continuing story, that's why she's facing Kana AGAIN at Mania-X.
And that's why it's had SO MUCH build. This isn't the end of Arisa on top, not by a long shot.

Teasers don't involved eight month long reigns with defenses against the company owner, a former ace, and a former name there is history/bad blood with like Hotta. If had just been one of these it would have qualified, but all three, no, this wasn't a teaser. It was a real title reign trying to push her up as fast as possible.

That's what I meant by teaser. That it was a quick ascension to set her up as the ace we all already know she is but moving it to the next level with the Kana stuff. Which is why it was snuffed like that. That's how you get fans who already identify with Arisa to care about what she does even more.

I was just at the book store and saw this magazine. The cover to the mini-mag on the inside, is the same as the front cover. Your top pic is from 2014, the  bottom pic is from 2013.

Ah that makes sense. I thought it was weird that Arisa and Seiya Sanada were on it twice.

Tokyo Sports has named its Joshi MVP of the year: Meiko Satomura.

Thank goodness they didn't go with Io.

A little random to give it to Meiko (but it's Tokyo Sports), but she was snubbed of it the past two years from Aikawa so I'm okay with her winning it.

According to Keeping the Spirit Alive the Joshi votes were:

Meiko Satomura [12 votes]
GAMI [1 vote]
Saki Akai [5 votes]
Nanae Takahashi [1 vote]
Lin Byron [1 vote]
Kyoko Kimura [2 votes]

Yeah, Saki Akai was second. I do realize that this is the award Aikawa won twice, but come on...

Who?

The fact that GAMI was nominated and Arisa and Io weren't proves how silly Tokyo Sports is.

While I'm a Meiko mark, I would have voted for Kana. Obviously she doesn't have many friends at Tokyo Sports.  Satomura seems like a lifetime achievement award rather than a strictly 2013 award.

I have no idea who Saki Akai is and voting for GAMI is like voting for a guy like Richie Sexson for the baseball Hall of Fame.

Looking she's a DDT model-turned-wrestler who was in that Muscle Girl drama that Shida was in and debuted in August.
